Setting the Foundation for Good Relations in Our Homeland was a webinar held on January 11th, 2021. A national group of nearly 500 health leaders from across Canada met virtually to hear the perspective of Indigenous Knowledge Keepers, led by members of the National Turtle Lodge Council of Knowledge Keepers, on the issue of racism in health care. Stephen is a 22 year old from Pennsylvania who is co-founder and National Field Director of Sunrise Movement; an organization that is mobilizing a grassroots army of young people across the country to combat the corrupting influence of fossil fuel executives and lobbyists. Stephen is one of the organizers of the ‘Sunrise Semester’ a full-time fellowship program with 70 young people ready to go all-in to make climate change matter in the 2018 elections in five key states. The program combines campaigning for progressive champions with direct action in order to expose the influence of fossil fuel money. His work with Sunrise Movement is focused on encouraging youth to elect real leaders who can stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. Stephen began organizing at Swarthmore College where he led a fossil fuel divestment campaign that received widespread media attention.

Stephen Grotz firmly believes that suburbia cannot be the future for urban planning and design. A lover of creating cities since he first played SimCity, Stephen works as a practice architect in Charlotte, North Carolina. Stephen is a recent graduate from the UNC Charlotte School of Architecture and has researched the social and financial obstacles that prevent upward mobility through real estate investment. Stephen shares why urban settings are vital and fences do not make good neighbors. Stephen is a recent graduate from the UNC Charlotte School of Architecture and currently practice architecture with a high-end residential contractor in Charlotte. Stephen has spent the last 10 years of his career living and designing homes in the suburbs, but his academic studies and personal experiences from the pandemic have displayed how suburbia cannot be the solution to social exchange and financial investment. While pursuing his Master of Architecture degree at UNC Charlotte, Stephen researched the social and financial obstacles that prevent upward mobility through real estate investment that will be outlined in a report made public this fall. As an uptown Charlotte citizen, Stephen believes that the only sustainable, resilient, and humane way to live is in an urban setting– because fences do not make good neighbors, they make good strangers.
