Many manufacturers claim their bioplastics products break apart faster in the environment, are made from safer materials, and have smaller climate change impacts. But with no federal standards defining or regulating bioplastics, companies have free rein to label whatever they want as “biodegradable” and “compostable.” As you can imagine, this lack of regulation has led to misleading marketing meant to falsely convince the public that certain products are environmentally friendly.

So, are any bioplastics products good alternatives to regular plastic? And, if so, how can you tell? Beyond Plastics is filling that knowledge gap for consumers and businesses that are genuinely trying to make environmentally responsible decisions. Their new report, Demystifying Biodegradable and Compostable Plastics (released on July 11, 2024) provides an overview of the various bioplastics materials currently on the market, the voluntary standards that govern their design, and scientific research findings to date on their safety to help individuals make evaluations of their options. It also covers the waste management issues associated with bioplastics and provides a checklist to guide consumers and businesses in their decision-making as they assess alternatives to plastic.

Simon Bernard, Expedition Leader of Plastic Odyssey presents you the first round-the-world expedition on a boat powered solely by plastic waste.

Simon graduated from the French Merchant Navy Academy (ENSM). He has sailed on several merchant vessels as a deck officer and engine officer. Passionate about finding solutions to environmental issues, he carried out several studies and projects on eco-friendly ships, CO2 emission reduction, circular economy, and low technologies for developing countries.

In 2016, he won the Green Tech Award initiated by the Ministry of the environment before founding the Plastic Odyssey NGO that aims to reduce the ocean’s pollution by promoting plastic recycling solutions adapted to developing countries.

Lily is an outgoing individual with diverse interests, including dancing, piano, and public speaking. She holds a Level 10 Chinese traditional dancing certificate and actively participates in speech competitions. After a 2011 march against strip-mining, Jackson Koeppel became committed to exploring alternatives to an extractive economy. That same year, he found his cause in Highland Park, MI. The Detroit-area city had lost 80% of its population, and in 2011, 1,000 of its 1,500 streetlights were decommissioned due to a $4 million municipal debt, leaving residential streets in darkness.

In response, Koeppel co-founded Soulardarity. This community organization is installing 200 solar streetlights and forming a cooperative of residents, businesses, and institutions to maintain them through annual dues. These affordable, eco-friendly lights foster community resilience and sustainability discussions.
