That conviction is what brought together movie actor Matt Damon and water expert and engineer Gary White. Over time, they and their organization, Water.org, have found an approach that works. Working with partners across East Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, they’ve helped over 40 million people access water and/or sanitation. "As we head into COP26, please know, we are not willing to die or sacrifice future generations for truly pitiful reasons of corporate greed and political power and hubris. Rather we are willing to fight to use our imaginations, to be alive, to thrive, to be courageous, to be uncomfortable for positive changes, to be bold, and to win. We are willing to endlessly fight for policies that prioritize social, racial and economic justice, and Indigenous and human rights."

Our communities and the planet are out of time, we need climate justice now! On October 26, Osprey Orielle Lake, WECAN Executive Director spoke out to world governments at an urgent one-day High-level Thematic Debate entitled “Delivering Climate Action: for People, Planet & Prosperity” at the UN Headquarters in New York. The event was hosted by the UN President of the General Assembly to call for hope and ambition in the lead up to COP26.
Osprey made it clear in her intervention today: No more sacrifice people, no more sacrifice zones. She spoke to world governments asking: Where are the government leaders willing to stand up to the fossil fuel industry? And, where is the $100 billion a year promised from wealthy countries so we can move toward a just transition? We can move billions once we claim a global climate emergency — and pulling from military budgets is a good place to begin.

Right now, current country commitments bring global warming to 2.7 degrees Celsius, far past the 1.5 degree target laid out in the Paris Climate Agreement. Osprey called for an end to false solutions and presented our Call to Action that was recently delivered to governments during the UNGA by Global Women’s Assembly for Climate Justice. It is a call to action from women and feminist around the world representing millions of people outlining in explicit detail what can be done to meet the 1.5 degree target with already existing climate justice frameworks.

On top of this, recent studies suggest that insect populations may have fallen by as much as 75 percent over the last few decades. • If it were not for our oceans, the planet would probably be already several degrees warmer than it is today due to the emissions we've expelled into the atmosphere. I think that we're looking at the total extinction of those biospheres by 2050 or so. There are some scientists who think there's some hope, and there have been some coral reefs that have recovered. But the impacts are so fast and so catastrophic, and we're so far from really changing course on carbon, it's hard for me to imagine that they endure, which means that the trips that we're now taking now to view those, we'll be taking really on the brink of mass extinctions. And it's important to keep in mind that globally, we are living already through mass extinction. The World Wildlife Fund says that 60 percent of all vertebrate mammals have died since just 1970. Animals are dying globally at rates never before seen in planetary history, and we are living through that and imposing those costs on the planet ourselves. In this episode, Sristi Kamal, our Northwest Representative in Oregon, provides testimony in support of House Bill 2548, which proposes a study to fund building crossings and safe passage structures for wildlife on Oregon highways. Video Transcript: Hi! My name is Sristi Kamal, and I'm the Senior Representative for Defenders of Wildlife in Oregon. Advocating for better wildlife policies does not stop even when we are working remotely. So today I will testify at the House Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources at the Oregon State Legislature. Chair Witt: Next - I'd like to call please upon Sristi Kamal, Dr. Kamal from Defenders of Wildlife. Sristi are you out there? Sristi: Yes I am. Thank you. Chair Witt: Welcome to our committee. Sristi: Thank you so much Chair Witt. Today I'm here to testify in support of House Bill 2548. The economic impact of wildlife collisions is the most obvious impact because the loss is undeniable, whether it is loss of life of the animal, property damage, harm and injury to humans, the mental trauma, and the cost of repairing and fixing it all. Washington, our neighboring state, estimated that on a 12.5 mile stretch of highway in their state wildlife collision costs 2.5 million dollars or $6,500 per collision annually and it's not going to be vastly different in Oregon. The other impact - though more challenging to economically quantify - is a loss of the individual animal and the ripple effect it causes on the population of a species and their ecosystem. Direct relationship between the health of a population of a species and its ability to move, to find new food sources, find mates, and find their way to keep their genetic gene pool healthy, All this is to say - that such a study is imperative to finding solutions that will prevent economic and ecological losses at such a scale. We believe such a study will show that the benefits from building passages and crossings and other structures will far outweigh the initial investment cost. Thank you for this opportunity. Sristi: Now, habitat connectivity is a big issue in wildlife conservation as wildlife need to have the ability to move, and expand in order to find better food sources, new homes and mates in order to keep their genetic pool diverse. So I'm advocating in support of this policy and I hope you remain engaged in the Oregon Legislative session and advocate for better wildlife policies as well.

The Pitchfork Ranch is more than another dusty homestead tucked away in a corner of the Southwest. It is a place with a story to tell about the most pressing crisis to confront humankind. It is a place where one couple is working every day to right decades of wrongs. It is a place of inspiration and promise. It is an invitation to join the struggle for a better planet. In this Speaker Series talk, A. Thomas Cole will tell the story of a decades-long habitat restoration project in southwestern New Mexico. Cole will share the past and present history of a very special ranch south of Silver City, which is home to a rare ciénaga wetland, a fragile desert grassland ecosystem, archaeological sites, and a critical wildlife corridor in a drought-stricken landscape. Today, after 21 years of restoration work by Cole and his wife Lucinda, the 11,300 acres that make up the Pitchfork Ranch provide an important setting for carbon sequestration, wildlife habitats, and the reintroduction of endangered or threatened species. Restoring the Pitchfork Ranch weaves together stories of mine strikers, cattle ranching, and the climate crisis into an important and inspiring call to action. Climate change is everywhere. Scientists say we have seven years left to turn things around. We are at a crossroads, and the clock is winding down. With this reality, there is still hope we can save the planet. The way to make progress at the speed and scale that the climate crisis demands is getting the world’s largest corporate emitters and their investors to act on this growing crisis. The only question now is how fast can they act to prevent the next climate catastrophe and realize the massive opportunities in the shift to a more just and sustainable economy.

Mindy Lubber is the CEO and President of the sustainability nonprofit organization Ceres. She has been at the helm since 2003, and under her leadership, the organization and its powerful networks have grown significantly in size and influence. As a well-known global thought leader, Mindy has inspired coalitions of institutional investors, corporate boards, C-suite executives and capital market leaders to factor sustainability risks and opportunities into decision-making. She regularly speaks to high-level world and national political leaders on clean energy and water policies, and has helped to change the political conversation around tackling climate change to one focused on jobs and the economy. She has received numerous awards for her leadership. In 2020, Lubber received the 'Champions of the Earth' award - the highest environmental honor from the United Nations. In the same year, Lubber made Barron’s Magazine’s inaugural list of the 100 most influential women in U.S. finance and was again a member of the list in 2021.

Prior to Ceres, Mindy served as a Regional Administrator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under former President Bill Clinton. She also founded Green Century Capital Management and served as the director of the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG).
