As a native Floridian, Sean Russell grew up enjoying life near the ocean. His interest in protecting marine environments was sparked by his involvement in 4-H marine science projects, as well as a high school internship at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota. When he was 16, he created the Stow It-Don’t Throw It Project, an effort to combat the negative impact of marine debris – especially discarded fishing line and gear – on marine wildlife. Youth involved with the project turn re-purposed tennis ball containers into fishing line recycling bins and distribute them to anglers while educating them about the importance of proper disposal of their line. Since its launch, the project has expanded to engage youth and partner organizations in 10 states. In 2011 Russell launched the Youth Ocean Conservation Summit at the Mote Lab. This annual summit provides youth with the skills needed to launch their own conservation projects and has inspired hundreds of students across the country to get involved in ocean conservation. A series of satellite summits are starting this year, beginning with the National Aquarium and the Seattle Aquarium.

Anne is the Head of Design at Dassault Systemes and she talked us through what she has learnt working at many large companies and what advice she’d give to young designers out there. Every year, container ships and auto carriers make thousands of transits in the shipping lanes in the Santa Barbara Channel region and along the California coast. These vessels are a significant source of air pollution and ship strikes on endangered blue, humpback, and fin whales. The Vessel Speed Reduction incentive program is a voluntary program that requests vessel operators to slow down to 10 knots or less, which reduces air pollution, fatal strikes on endangered whales, and ocean noise. Sean joined Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary in 1997 and serves as the site's resource protection coordinator. He is responsible for developing policies and programs to address industrial, military, commercial, and recreational uses and impacts in and around the sanctuary. He also handles emergency response, enforcement, permits, community relations and is a liaison to the media. In addition, Sean helped create the marine protected area network to restore local fish and invertebrate populations and habitats in the sanctuary and helped the state of California to do the same in state waters on the mainland. The tourism industry requires huge amount of natural resources and creates a huge environmental footprint. Yet the onus is always on the travel consumer to ‘make better choices’. What does it look like when the hotels step up and commit to taking responsibility for their environmental footprint? This talk explains why the myth that becoming an environmentally responsible hotel is not profit-friendly is totally wrong. Last year was the first year the word ‘overtourism’ made the dictionary. The press has been filled with stories about the pressure on places like Venice, Amsterdam, and Bali, and often it seems hopeless. However, there are clear solutions ready to be implemented and change doesn't have to take years. Sean Nino is a development expert in the fields of energy, water and waste, with over 8 years of experience in consulting and research for various clients in the Indonesian sustainable tourism and environmental property development sector. His passion lies within environmental sustainable systems design and methods, that change and challenge our existing norms. Sean is the co-founder of Eco Mantra, a team of engineers and specialists that collaborate with developers and architects to help them save environmental resources and ultimately drive down costs. He is also one of the main drivers behind the Merah Putih Hijau movement, which builds, operates and transfers community-owned material management facilities to communities around Bali. Sean grew up in Bali and spent 12 years in Germany, before moving back to Bali in 2013 to work on the problems he is passionate about.
