Aura Tegría Cristancho is a 26-year old indigenous lawyer from Colombia’s U’wa Nation. Since late 2013, she has served as the legal advisor to the U’wa Association of Traditional Authorities and Councils (ASOU’WA). In September, 2017 our friend and ally Aura Tegria traveled from her home in U’wa territory of the cloud forests of Colombia on a multi-city tour in the U.S. Aura brought with her the U’wa message of respect for Mother Earth and generational fight as indigenous peoples to protect her lands from oil drilling and other resource extraction. “According to our beliefs, the world is a house that is held up by four fundamental pillars, each of which plays a vital role for the survival of the natural world. It is necessary for us to teach this message to our non-indigenous brothers and sisters. This way their hearts and mindsets - full of greed - will change and not continue harming our Mother Earth. In recent years, the emergence of edge computing has reduced the costs associated with transferring data to centralized cloud servers by relocating data processing to edge devices placed within the local network. Edge computing is a promising solution for distributed applications requiring privacy and real-time data processing capability with minimal delays. However, utilizing the full potential of this paradigm is not feasible without the capabilities to analyse complex data and generate new content. This talk investigated the challenges of deploying generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the edge to enhance privacy and efficiently use network and computational resources. By considering the limitations of edge environments and exploring current solutions for optimizing AI models on resource-limited devices, this talk addressed the challenges of implementing efficient distributed learning for generative AI applications, such as Large Language Models. Network virtualization (a.k.a. network slicing) allows multiple logical networks to coexist on a single physical network while isolated from each other, i.e., without performance or security interferences. It was first propounded as a diversifying attribute of the future inter-networking paradigm that can enable seamless integration of new features resulting in a more rapid evolution of the Internet architecture. Later, it was rolled out in data center networks to provide bandwidth guarantees to cloud applications. More recently, it has been incorporated as a pillar of 5G and beyond mobile communication networks to provide differentiated services with stringent bandwidth, latency and reliability requirements. However, despite a significant progress in virtualization research and technologies over the last two decades, the end-to-end deployment of virtual networks in practice remains unrealized. This talk provided an overview of the genesis and evolution of network virtualization, present key underlying challenges and solution ideas, and an outlook to end-to-end 5G and beyond network slicing. In her inspiring talk, ecosystem scientist, Dr. Carly Phillips, explores our climate vocabulary, and the future of wildfires and forests in a rapidly warming world. Learn about the systems and policies that govern our progress on climate action, and why forests alone can’t solve the climate crisis. Carly is an ecosystem scientist who studies carbon, wildfire, and solutions for the climate crisis. Her research has taken her from cloud forests in Costa Rica to arctic tundra in Alaska, which has highlighted how rapidly increasing temperatures threaten global ecosystems and strengthened Carly’s passion to address climate change.
