,000 years ago, humanity began a dramatic transformation of the landscape of Southern China. Forests were cleared for rice cultivation and firewood to power what would become Hong Kong’s first major industrial endeavor. As China and other nations began to explore and trade on the high-seas, a rich bounty of life teemed below the surface of the South China Sea. For the ensuing millennia, that bounty was all but extinguished. Today, we live in a bustling metropolis in a landscape of mega-cities - the Greater Bay Area. With more than 100 million people in our neighborhood the impacts on nature are stronger than ever. Yet, beneath the waves the ocean is eerily quiet - fisheries are gone, mangrove forests, seagrasses, oyster and coral reefs have been destroyed. Climate change, pandemics, and waning resources are a constant threat. Globally, by 2050 we predict these ecosystems may be lost to history. In this talk, I will introduce what we can do to restore the ocean that surrounds us and regain the benefits of proper ecosystem functioning? How can we re-invest in our ecological future? Can technology and entrepreneurship reverse our slippery slope to catastrophe? ​ 三千年前，人類開始為華南地理環境帶來巨變。森林被開墾為稻田，其林木則為人類建設所用。當中華文明開始與海外文化經商往來，華南水域之下亦充滿別開一面的生機。只是隨著千年已過，水底生命亦逐漸逝去。今日我們居於巨大的都市群——粵港澳大灣區内其中一個充滿活力的都市。隨著鄰近地區常住人口超過一億，自然生態面臨前所未有之影響。然而，波紋之下，水底生態一片寂靜:魚業蕭條；紅樹林、海草、生蠔與珊瑚群悉數被毀。 氣候變化、疫症與資源緊縮一直威脅世界。我們估算大約在2050年前，全球將失去上述的生態圈。在此演講中，我將介紹可以修復海洋生態、重獲健康生態圈利益的方法，何以再投資生態未來，並討論以科技與創業行動，提出挽回生態的可能。 David is a multi-disciplinary ecologist who studies how humans impact the ecology and evolution of the oceans. He is particularly interested in coral reef ecosystems, which are currently undergoing a perilous decline. His group’s research scales from the ecosystem to cellular level, and combines tools in geochemistry, stable isotope ecology, ecophysiology, and molecular biology to answer questions pertaining to coral symbiosis and interactions with anthropogenic stressors. By improving our understanding of how corals function and how they have evolved over time, his goal is to foster their conservation for future generations. Since the event, The #Cannabis Certification Council has been established representing a merger of Ethical Cannabis Alliance & Organic Cannabis Association. Ashley Preece was named the Exec. Director.

In order to address the current state of the industry, and the need for robust labor and environmental standards, ECA Executive Director Ashley Preece was joined by two outstanding guest presenters. Hear from Laura Day Rivero, who has extensive experience implementing sustainable practices in the cannabis industry, most recently as Operations Director at Yerba Buena, one of the first OLCC licensed cannabis cultivators in Oregon;  Dr. Elizabeth Bennett, Assistant Professor of International Affairs and Director of the Political Economy Program at Lewis & Clark College, as well as a Research Associate at the Center for Fair and Alternative Trade (CFAT) at Colorado State University.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle is a familiar mantra, however, efforts to help the environment have been primarily focused on recycling. Recycling, although beneficial, comes with its own carbon footprint. Siva Visvesvaran wants us to promote ways to rethink what we do with our waste and find creative ways to reduce and reuse. Siva develops new solutions to existing environmental problems. He has developed numerous innovations to improve everyday recycling including the Linear Water Storage system for his school, which enables rainwater to be stored in a fraction of the space usually required. Siva is currently studying electrical engineering, and hopes it will allow him to deliver more sustainable and affordable sources of energy to developing countries. In addition, he is the co-founder of a social enterprise called Project Paplet. The organization set up a ‘Reuse Initiative’ which takes paper already used on one side and turns it into booklets. The booklets are donated to 50 refugee schools throughout Malaysia through the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. Since its launch in 2016, it has saved around 5 tons of paper. Siva is also an associate fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society and one of the 60 Queen’s Young Leader of 2018 bestowed by HM Queen Elizabeth II. In our politically polarized times, we may not always want to interact with those who have different viewpoints from ours. As lobbyists for a bipartisan climate solution, leaving our echo chambers is critical to achieving our mission. In this Braver Angels Town Hall progressives/liberals will hear from a diverse panel of conservatives and learn to appreciate common ground. You will leave with an understanding that bipartisanship is not just a given - it requires conscious effort from all. Dr. Bill Doherty is a Professor in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota where he directs two centers relevant to today’s presentation: The Minnesota Couples on the Prink Project and The Citizen Professional Center. Following the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, he co-founded Better Angels, a citizen initiative to counteract political polarization and restore the fraying social fabric in American society. Jacob Abel is a spokesperson for RepublicEn.org and a former conservative outreach fellow with Citizens Climate Lobby. In these roles he has lobbied several congressional offices, published multiple op-eds, and appeared on new outlets such BBC, Vice-News, and NowThis. During his time in CCL he worked with chapters to help increase their conservative membership and hosted workshops on how to speak with Republicans about climate change. Steve Saltwick partners with Lynn Heady to catalyze the growth and the impact of the field organization (local Alliances and the 50 States) of Braver Angels. He co-founded the Braver Angel Alliance in Central Texas in 2018. He is a bio-psychologist whose career took a path through high-tech on six continents. He researches the guiding principles of the mammalian brain. He has published in SCIENCE but prefers to dote on his first grandchild and two border collies. Ron is a retired teacher from Denver Public Schools, is an Instructional Technologist and holds a Business BA from Iowa State in Industrial Administration. Ron credits being a Republican to his hero, Frederick Douglass, and he enjoys community service through volunteering, including that with Braver Angels. He also coached football, wrestling, and track for 30 years, and enjoys reading and writing. CCL State Coordinator for California, Elizabeth Fenner joined CCL in 2015 to help further what still seems like breathtakingly effective and fair policy. A teacher and researcher who is passionate about respecting all voices, Elizabeth has worked in and volunteered with schools, libraries, nonprofit organizations and community groups.
